Overview

Krutsiferski, un joven preceptor de origen humilde, es contratado en casa de un rico terrateniente "semiestepario", sin lustre social y sin ninguna ocupación. En la casa vive tambien una hija ilegítima de este, Liubov. Los dos jóvenes se enamoran y se casan y empiezan a llevar una vida modesta pero independiente y feliz en la ciudad. Ahí vuelve un terrateniente de treinta años, Bieltov, decidido a hacer algo con su vida, y su introducción en el hogar de los Krutsiferski se va tiñendo de una ominosa ambigüedad. En cualquier caso, la instrucción, la cultura y la altura de miras se estrellan contra una pequeña comunidad de costumbres y jerarquías ridículas. Herzen compuso un magnífico cuadro de la sociedad patriarcal rusa, enriquecido por personajes secundarios magistralmente retratados y amenizado por un humor y una habilidad narrativa excepcionales.
